Six days of Ghent Track Meet.

Postby Simon » Tue Jan 20 2015 10:20

Prompted by Dom I am looking into a trip to Ghent for the Six days of Ghent track meet. I am sure most of you have heard of it, if not here is an article about it,
http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2013/ ... ng-belgium

Current thinking is to go for the weekend (20th to 22nd November), take a ferry across the channel, cycle to Ghent, visit the track racing over the weekend as well as cycle some of the classic cobbles, drink, eat and generally have a good end of season jolly.
We would need a van and a driver to transport our clothes etc and accomodation can be in a hostel or an IBIS hotel for around £30 pp per night.

Please pop your name on this thread if it sounds like something you fancy.

I'm going to organise this with Dom as he did it last year, here is a copy of an email this morning outlining the weekend

Hi Simon,

I think the best format to do would be:

Friday: Ferry over to Dunkirk/Calais and park somewhere in France and leave cars – Do a route to Ghent around 70 miles which includes some of the Paris-Roubaix cobble sections like Carrefour de I’Arbre. http://www.podiumcafe.com/2011/4/7/2096 ... is-roubaix

Arrive Ghent and go and watch the 6 day, last year we watched Cav which was great, there is a proper party going on in the middle, but I would recommend getting seats on the outside as you get a much better view of the racing and you can still go down to the party in the middle.

On the Saturday last year we did a 60 mile route including some of the cobbled climbs of the tour of Flanders. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koppenberg Saturday night watch the racing.

Sunday - cycle back to the car direct route

Last year I had a total of 24 people and 2 support cars, but you only need one van for that many people. Some people have expressed an interest in doing over 4 days and leaving Thursday/ and or coming back on the Monday, but I think that would reduce the numbers.

You need 2 speed groups, last year we tried as one and it we only managed about a 15mph average as I tried to be an inclusive as possible on who I invited.

I would suggest a 15-17mph group and an 18mph+ group.

The cost last year was about £180 per person including homemade food on the way out and back, broom wagon, hostel and tickets. I got £100 deposit non-refundable paid up front and that paid for the tickets and ferry.

http://www.sport.be/z6sdaagse/2014/nl/?1=22 - Ghent 6 day website

http://www.13oclock.be/ Hostel website.

Simon what I would ask is that we arrange/organise it together as I would still like to invite the guys from Worthing etc and no reason we can’t all get tickets and rooms as long as we are organised and book early.

Between our club and Doms group we now have about 35 possibles. We are saying 40 will be the limit after that you can be on a reserve list if someone changes their mind or doesn't pay the deposit. Therefore if you haven't expressed an interest and would like to come please get your name down on this list a.s.a.p.

After 3 hours of research and number crunching Dom and I have come up with prices and an itenernary for the Ghent 2015 trip. This is going to be an awesome trip, classic cycling routes with cobbles and canals combined with track racing beer and food. All accomodation is in hotels and includes breakfast, at about £200 for 3 nights it's a bloody bargain.
Check out the word doc attached which tells you all you need to know. DON'T MISS OUT ON THIS, IT'S GOING TO BE A BLAST!!

Okay boys, further news on the Ghent trip. We need your decision on ferry times. The default ferry time is 12 midday meaning we would arrive at our hotel at 4.30pm with the time difference. That means leaving here at about 9am, so you need the day off. If you want to catch a later ferry, 6pm that's possible and you would arrive at the hotel around 10.30 pm.
Please let us know a.s.a.p which ferry you intend to be on so we can organise car share and book the ferries.

Simon & Dom.

Please check out the attached spread sheet that Dom has prepared(it's very pretty). It outlines who is sharing both rooms and cars. Please let us know if there are any mistakes.

Doms Message,
I have split everyone into pairs to share a room, let me know any changes. We also have a few in single rooms.

I have also colour coded the nominated drivers and who they are taking, you may also need to take some bikes as well. Again let me know if you want to make any changes on this, and I will need the car make model and car reg to book the ferry.

A big thank you for everyone who has volunteered to drive to France, much appreciated.

As soon as I get confirmation, we will book the ferry and give out the final cost for Ghent.

Many thanks,

Dom.
